The International 2013 – Items, Couriers and Cosmetics and More!In the latest patch by Valve here, there were bug fixes along with a new addition of being able to view games from DotaTV on your computer using an XBOX 360 controller. What goes on unseen in the patch however is the addition of new items, and three International couriers.
The International 3: Can you feel it?
There will be a section each for the following: Wallpaper tutorial, The International Couriers, The 5 Immortals, and Chests. (Misc stuff included!)
There are three types of backgrounds that you can set for your in-game menu viewing pleasure. First up is your basic, down to earth standard issue red background as can be seen below. This is the default loading screen when you start Dota 2 – which can be changed to other backgrounds.
Red – Standard Issue!
First up, go to your Steam Library. Right click Dota 2, and select properties. After you have completed that, a pop-up box will open.
Dota 2 < Properties
Click the box that says, “Set Launch Options”, and type in the commands below for the respective wallpapers. Voila! You’re done and good to go for your swanky new background! Take note that you need to set the options FIRST then start Dota 2 for it to take effect. Should you have set the options after you have started Dota 2, just restart the game. In addition, this setting is unique to your computer, meaning that if you log on to Steam in other locations, you will need to set the options again.
Second wallpaper – the International 2012 edition (Blue). To set this wallpaper, just go type the following in the “Set Launch Options” box, “-International2012″

Last but not least, this year’s edition: The International 2013 Wallpaper (Green). To set this wallpaper, just go type the following in the “Set Launch Options” box, “-International”.

Perhaps the subject of much controversy, couriers are loved by most and are the objects of envy (not for SingSing though). The arguably the most valuable and costly items in the whole of Dota 2, they are highly sought after not only because of their unusual effect, but because of their ability to draw Ooohs and Aaaahs from spectators and players alike. With that being said, some types of couriers are extremely rare, and therefore, prices for them soar through the roof. Below will be a small write up about them, with pictures courtesy of CyborgMatt.
Trapjaw the Boxhound!
Trapjaw the Boxhound
Bearing uncanny similarities to last year’s Lockjaw, the Boxhound this year has disappointed many. Although the courier’s animation is flawless with excellent conceptual plans, the design is sadly lacking. Not receiving as much hype as their previous year’s counterpart, this purple and green jewel box could have been designed better: Shorter legs, slightly smaller mouth, brighter colours, and use of contrasting colours would have made a large difference.

Fezzle Feez the Magic Carpet Smeevil
Fezzle Fez the Magic Carpet Smeevil
The Aladdin of couriers, this carpet toting Smeevil is not one to be messed with. Sporting a traditional ‘Middle-Eastern’ styled headwear with his goods placed around him, this Smeevil could perhaps be Valve’s saving grace this year (in terms of couriers, of course). With an extremely admirable particle effect, this combines with the in-game courier movement speed burst buff to create a dazzling red and green lightshow.

Osky the Ottragon
Osky the Ottragon
Pleasing to the eyes, Osky is a scale clad green Ottragon that will bring your items into the heat of the battle! Perhaps as a slight reference to Nature’s Prophet, this courier sports antlers and has gold coins hanging by his side. But Valve’s choice of colour for this friendly Ottragon is questionable; Combined with a green unusual particle effect, this would make the ‘courier trail’ not as noticeable as the previous ones’.

The 5 Immortals:
With the last patch a few days back, all Compendium owners were given an Immortal Reliquary, containing one of the following items: Whalehook (Pudge), Cauldron of Xahryx (Lone Druid), Leviathan Whale Blade (Kunkka), Scree’auk’s Talon (Vengeful Spirit), and Mace of the Chosen (Abbadon).
The Immortal Reliquary
Below, the items that can be obtained from this special one time pseudo chest are shown – not in any particular order, of course.
Item #1: Whalehook
Close up of the weapon. Not too close.
This Whalehook anything that gets into his path
Whalehook in action!
A nicely animated and designed weapon, perhaps if it came in a different colour, it might be abit more appealing. This brings the total number of immortal items for pudge to be 2, second highest after Ursa.
Effect: Causes Pudge’s Meat Hook to rotate 360 degrees when launched.
Item #2: Cauldron of Xahryx
‘I love pot’
Epic smelling stuff.
Changes your attack animation – this is pure gold.
Roots. Roots everywhere.
Described by some as the “worst possible item to get”, this item generally looks good and proper. However from the player’s perspective, this item pales in comparison to it’s counterparts’; Who picks Lone Druid in games anyways? (77th Most Picked Hero)
Effect: Changes attack animation; Leaves short smoke trail (Not visible to enemies)
Update: Valve has added a new entangling roots animation for this hero. When the Cauldron is equipped, the modified roots will proc instead of the normal ones. Differences are visual only.
Item #3: Leviathan Whale Blade
This whale blow you away!
Sword in hand
Whale that escalated quickly.
Labelled by fans to be the best of the 5 items listed, the Whale Blade is not only very well done, but it’s effect is really impressive. Changing your typical torrent animation, this will not only summon a water spout, but a massive whale to batter your enemies. Currently the item with the most demand, it sports the highest price of all the 5 immortals.
Effect: Changes the torrent animation; You now summon a whale.
Item #4: Scree’auk’s Talon
Slice and Dice.
More Vengeful than ever.
This will blow you away.
One of the more popular items, Scree’auk’s Talon changes your basic Vengeful Spirit’s, well… weapon of vengeance to this glowing red curved weapon of sorts. Your attacks will look different, your Wave of Terror will look different. They even changed up the stuns and Swap colours. Still doesn’t resemble a talon to me though.
Effects: Changes Stun and Swap colour, Attack animation (slightly), Wave of Terror animation.
Item #5: Mace of The Chosen
Item: Close Up
Mega Club of Death
Behold the Mace!
Aphotic Shield – Immortal Mace Edition
He is now glowi-er and has added surrounding animations!
Well, there’s really nothing much to say about the mace. The weapon is basically a huge, long mace that materialises whenever enemies are in the vicinity. Although there is a slight effect to the attack animation whereby a greenish glow can be seen in the backswing, it is what it is – a mace.
Effect: Slight tinge added the mace’s attack animation; Backswing effect (?)
EDIT: The Immortal Mace now buffs up Aphotic shield, as well as the Hero’s Aura.
Immortal 5 – Video by hexOr
Since the latest item updates, DotaCinema has created a new video to showcase the new items HERE.

This looks… Lucky.
